A famous woman was pestered to write her autobiography, but hated the idea that readers would know her intimate personal affairs. What she wanted was to write the truth in such a way that nobody could be certain it was true (and nobody could quote it as being true) - yet they would still believe it to be true! The idea came to her of writing a fictional autobiography - a book that was openly described as such so that her readers would entertain a smidgen of doubt about every "fact" that it contained. But, the woman reasoned, if the book were 100% true it wouldn't be "fictional." And if it had any fiction at all it wouldn't be an "autobiography." Here's how she solved the dilemma. At the start of the book she wrote the following: This book contains at least one fictional statement. This allowed her to write 100% truth yet leaving her readers in doubt as to whether any given statement was true.
