OBSERVATION - DEATH OF THE MISSION:
The Mission should grow smaller, the Church should grow bigger.
"WE ARE NO LONGER THE OBJECT OF MISSION WORK"
"What happens when the church become truly autonomous and says to the missionary, We no longer need you as a missionary. We are a part of the Church and are no longer the object of mission work. We will rather be participating in the larger mission of the church. If you wish to work with us and in some cases under us, we will be glad for your assistance. If not, we will have to ask you to leave. In other words, he/she is no longer a missionary but a fraternal worker. This is a valid development in the life of a growing church. It should be the missionary's aim to bring the church to this point."
Found in Facing the Facts in Modern Missions.
In other words, the mission grows smaller, and the church grows bigger. The mission actually will disappear, and all its work will be taken over by the church. Every missionary should be working toward the death of the mission.
But, don't ever mention this concept to a group of missionaries! If a church develops it comes as a surprise, not as a direct result of planning and strategy.
"The emergence of the responsible Church as a result of the mission preaching of the Gospel to non-Christians is something for which all mission boards must be prepared, and to which most of them look forward as the sign of God's blessing upon their labors, yet this event nearly always comes as a surprize."
