We spent two hours at the castle. The guide was excellent. The present building stands on the site of the Swedish Fort Carolusbourg, built in 1653. Britain captured the castle 1665. They expanded it to the present size and shape. In the next 25 years the slave dungeons were constructed and made accessible only from the sea. The guide mentioned that the screams and noise made by the people as they were taken out to the waiting slave ships was disconcerting to the towns people.
